The Oxford English Dictionary defines “love” as: a strong feeling of affection. Personally I think this is an understatement. I think there are many spiritually orientated people who believe that Love is perhaps one of the highest vibrational feelings we can obtain – and it makes sense. It feels good to be in love, give love and feel loved.

There are many forms of love, such as love for our favorite foods, love of babies, love for our children, love for our animals and love we feel for our spouses/partners (and every single one of them can really test our levels of affection!)

Some love may come more naturally to us. This is the kind we don’t really have to work at, like loving babies, or loving our animals, or indeed loving our favorite foods – often we love these too much!  But what about the most important type of love: the love we feel, and more importantly show, ourselves? Surely it’s easy and natural for us to love ourselves completely? I mean if we can love our animals and another person then we’re bound to love ourselves too, right?!

As we are all well aware, this is not always the case. In fact, it’s probably more accurate to say that you rarely show yourself the kind of love you show others. Not sure what I’m talking about? Check out what I like to call the “No Love Here” list:


  • Eating foods that don’t nurture you or make you feel good about yourself
  • All the times you call yourself nasty names – let’s face it your friends would be history if they called you the same
  • When you don’t let yourself rest, relax and have fun
  • Flogging yourself to work harder and longer hours
  • For every time you feel like shit because you think you are ‘useless’, ‘lazy’, ‘overwhelmed’ ‘not smart enough’ ‘not doing it as good as somebody else’ ‘you’re broken’ ‘something must be wrong with you’.
  • You allow your partner, friends, teenagers and parents to take you for granted, devalue you or treat you like shit.
  • Maybe you feel lost. You’re doing your duties as a wife and mother and in the midst of it you’ve forgotten about yourself, and your own needs. Forgotten who you were before you became Mrs or mom.

Do any of these sound familiar? Then you may be suffering from an internal lack of love. And unfortunately. this is only the tip of the iceberg. You can be sure that you’d be able to add much more to this list if you stopped long enough to think and observe the way you treat yourself.

The bad news about suffering from a lack of self-love is that YOU teach people how to treat you and love you. You set your own boundaries and standards for others and for yourself. You are 100% responsible. Which means that if you were to be completely honest with yourself, you’d probably realize that your lack of self-love is affecting your outside relationships, as well.

The good news about all this is that you have the power to do something about it. You can change things, if you so choose. But if you start blaming and pointing the finger, you’re just adding to your “No Love Here” list. So what are you going to decide: blame or change?

There may be lots of reasons why you “can’t” love yourself. Maybe you had a raw deal in life and had the worst parents in the world. Maybe you were abused so you think you have to abuse yourself. Whatever it is acknowledge it and get ready to move on. Recognize that you’ve always done your best with what you knew at the time and declare that you are ready to learn a new way.
